Who We Are
The
Young Marines is a not-for-profit youth education program for boys and girls. The program focuses on character building
through a combination of self-discipline, teamwork and leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young
Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. There are over 300 Young Marine units nationwide,
including international units and affiliates in Okinawa, Japan, Germany and Australia.
We
meet for two 13 week sessions per year. One in the Spring and the other in the Fall. The initial cost of the program is $75. Each
13 week session that follows is $50. The meetings are held at 4850 Progress Drive in Columbus, IN on
Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
The
Young Marines strengthens the lives of America's youth by teaching the importance of self-confidence, academic achievement,
honoring our veterans, good citizenship, community service, and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Young Marines learn new skills,
and earn rank. They earn ribbons in areas such as CPR, swimming, map reading, drug prevention training, conservation, first
aid, academic achievement, community service and physical fitness.
All Young Marines must be actively enrolled
in public, private or certified homeschool. Failure to maintain enrollment in one of the above is grounds for dismissal from
the program. You may be asked to provide documentation for proof of enrollment.
Our
Young Marines perform Color Guard for the Columbus DARE graduations, Indianapolis Indians, the Franklin Mayors prayer breakfast
and the Indiana Pacers when asked.
Who We Are Not
The Young Marines is not a summer camp, residential
program or a para-military organization. We do not teach warfare or combat. The Young Marines is not a recruiting program
for the U.S. Marine Corps. It is not a boot camp for seriously troubled youth. We believe that discipline begins at
home, and is reinforced by good habits and proper supervision. We are not a "scared straight" program.
